One of four free presentations during the year, the society will host Glenn Gordinier, author of “The Rockets’ Red Glare: The War of 1812 and Connecticut” on May 27. The book was created by a partnership of the New London County Historical Society with Mystic Seaport, the Stonington Historical Society, the New London Maritime Society and the Lyman Allyn Art Museum to commemorate the bicentennial of the beginning of the War of 1812.
From June 1812 to January 1815, the United States joined forces with France against Great Britain. 2012 thru 2015 marks the bicentennial of this war. Although Connecticut did not generally support the war, the state was involved, especially the coastal towns. Enemy warships attacked communities up and down Long Island Sound and the region saw aerial bombardment, kidnapping, torpedo warfare, espionage and improvised explosive devices. The presentation will include accounts of heroes, traitors, bombardments, sneak attacks and heroines.
The presentation will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the First Church Congregational, 2183 Main St. Call 860-633-6890 or visit http://www.hsgct.org for events and more information.
