The Chatham-Kent Museum is extending the War of 1812 bicentennial for another three months.
The local museum is one of only two in Ontario selected to host a travelling War of 1812 exhibit that is part of the Canadian War Museum’s collection housed in Ottawa. A grand opening was held Friday for the exhibit that runs until March 16.
Deanna Provost-Bullard, education co-ordinator, said the national museum put out a call to museums that wanted to host the special exhibit.
She said the museum had to go through about a two-month process of filing reports and outlining staff qualifications to be able to host the exhibit, which was at the St. Catharines museum this past summer.
She added the museum received federal grant from the Museum Assistance Program to help pay for the $10,000 cost to host the exhibit.
“We really wanted it, because we have history here,” Provost-Bullard said. “We have War of 1812 history and a lot of people overlook that or they don’t know about it, so we really felt we needed to get this exhibit here.”
She said the exhibit covers the national history of the war.
Noting the museum had a local War of 1812 exhibit this past year, she said “we really wanted to give the full scope.”
Even if people aren’t War of 1812 history buffs, they are “going to definitely get a different perspective coming in here,” Provost-Bullard said. “You’re really going to get that American perspective, you’re going to get some visuals that you didn’t see, locally, previously.
“There’s some great pieces in this exhibit,” she added.
Provost-Bullard said another highlight is the native perspective that the exhibit provides, noting, “a lot of that has been glossed over in history.”
Work has also gone into preparing for school visits, which will feature re-enactments and other programs surrounding the exhibit.
“We have very extensive programming done for this,” Provost-Bullard said. “We’ve got a great package for schools.”
There is no extra charge to see the display. The museum is open to the public daily with admission being by donation.
