Several wineries have launched a line of local wines commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812 in time for this summer’s Tall Ships Festival.

“We believe strongly in the regional collaboration both the festival and the wine represent,” said Tom O’Brien, president of Essex Pelee Island Coast wineries. The STOWAWAY 1812 wines are considered limited edition collector’s items.

From July 9 to Sept. 1, a special barrel of the wine will be stowed aboard Liana’s Ransom. The ship is one of the tall ships participating in the event Aug. 30-Sept. 2. It’s called the Coastal Trails: Sails to See Tall Ships Festival in Windsor, Amherstburg, Kingsville and Pelee Island.

Each winery provides a different wine, highlighting a tall ship. Beginning July 4, the wines can be purchased at Colio, Cooper’s Hawk, Oxley, Pelee Island, Smith and Wilson and Sprucewood Shores. Visit
