Looking for a new way to mark the bicentennial of the War of 1812?

Try the Route 1812 Driving Tour.

The Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island and the National Park Service, MotorCities National Heritage Area have combined to launch a historical road trip through Windsor, Essex County, Michigan and Ohio.

It has 21 stops and represents another way to sell Windsor and Detroit as a two-nation destination, said Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island CEO Gordon Orr.

“It’s a historical road trip that would take us through parts of Michigan, Ohio and southern Ontario and explore the people, the politics and the biggest battle that defined us,” he said.

There are six stops in Essex County including Fort Malden and the Park House Museum in Amherstburg, the John R Park Homestead on Lake Erie, the Francois Baby House and the Duff-Baby House in Windsor and Olde Sandwich Towne.

In Michigan there are 11 sites including monuments to battles, the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, Fort Wayne in Detroit, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle and the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse north in Port Huron.

In Ohio there are stops in PutinBay, Maumee, Toledo and at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg.

The brochure with a map is available at http://www.motorcities.org/Our+Activites++Programs/Route+1812+Driving+Tour-231.html or by contacting Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island.
