Canadian Playwright does 1812 in Fort Erie

The curtains are about to go up for “Sparks from a Campfire” written and directed by Canadian Playwright Sharon Pollock.

Fort Erie– Canadian playwright Sharon Pollock is bringing theatre to Niagara in a new way, with the world premiere of her new play “Sparks from a Campfire.” Written and directed by the first woman of Canadian theatre herself, Pollock’s play is an entertaining look at the War of 1812, meant to bring the War to life the way no play has done before.  The play will take you on an adventure back to 1812, which Pollock says is full of surprising, scary, funny, sad, and serious bits that are theatrically engaging and entertaining!

Presented by Dominion Repertory Theatre (DRT) with support from the Fort Erie 1812 Bicentennial Committee and Old Fort Erie, “Sparks from a Campfire” is the second play presented by the theatre company this year to celebrate the Bicentennial.  It follows their original play “The Lion and the Eagle,” written and directed by DRTs Artistic Director Brian Coatsworth. Performed in front of eight sold out audiences throughout January 2012, “The Lion and the Eagle” officially launched Fort Erie’s 1812 Bicentennial Celebrations.

The actors in “Sparks from a Campfire” have a little more work ahead of them. The play takes place Tuesdays- Sundays, July 28- September 2 for a total of 28 performances.  Held under the stars at Old Fort Erie, it promises to be an impressive performance.

“Working with Sharon has been an absolutely wonderful experience” said Vince Marinaccio, Executive Director of DRT. “She knows exactly what she is looking for from the actors and she makes sure she gets it.  It has truly been an honour to have her lend her talents to this production.”

The play opens this Saturday, July 28. Tickets can be purchased at Old Fort Erie, 350 Lakeshore Rd, or by calling 905-871-0540. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $7.50 for children under 12, and free for children under the age of 5.
